Using ASK AI in CaseScribe

Updated over a week ago

ASK AI is an AI-powered chatbot that helps you work directly with your case data in CaseScribe. It understands your case facts, active filters, and overall case context, so you can quickly find information, summarize evidence, draft content, and explore case strategy without leaving your workflow.

ASK AI is designed to help you move faster while staying grounded in verified case materials.

What You Can Use ASK AI For

ASK AI supports both simple and advanced casework tasks.

You can use ASK AI to:

  • Find specific facts, documents, or issues in the case

  • Summarize evidence or case facts

  • Count claimed or service-connected conditions

  • Draft briefs, IME letters, or other legal writing

  • Explore case strategy and issue development

  • Find information that was not automatically extracted as a fact

  • Identify missing evidence, missing documents, or gaps in the record

  • Search across both extracted facts and document text

Responses are generated within seconds and stream live as they are created.

How ASK AI Helps With More Than Extracted Facts

ASK AI is no longer limited to automatically extracted facts.

You can instruct ASK AI to search for information that may not have been extracted by the system. This is especially helpful when you are looking for details buried in medical records, statements, exams, or other long documents.

ASK AI can now:

  • Search for facts that were not automatically extracted

  • Read document text directly, not just extracted facts

  • Look for missing evidence or missing documents

  • Help you explore anything relevant to the case by simply asking

In many situations, the fastest way to see what ASK AI can do is to try a direct question in plain language.

Creating Facts and Tags From ASK AI Responses

ASK AI can also help you take action on the information it finds.

Creating Facts From ASK AI Results

If ASK AI finds useful information during your search, you can create a fact from that response instead of manually creating one yourself.

This makes it easier to turn useful findings into structured case data without repeating the work manually.

Creating Tags From ASK AI Results

ASK AI can also help apply tags based on the results of your search.

Instead of manually tagging facts one by one, you can use the tagging option from the AI response to apply tags more efficiently.

This is especially useful when ASK AI identifies a group of related facts connected to the same issue, condition, or theory.

How to Open ASK AI

You can launch ASK AI from multiple places in CaseScribe:

  • The Ask AI button in the header

  • The Case Summary view

  • The Filters and Sorts panel

When ASK AI opens, you may see suggested prompts such as drafting a brief or creating an IME letter. These prompts are optional, but they can be helpful starting points if you are not sure what to ask.

How Filters Affect ASK AI

ASK AI always respects your active filters, regardless of where you open it.

This includes filters such as:

  • Specific conditions, such as PTSD or diabetes

  • Document types or subtypes

  • Tags applied to facts

Only the facts that match your current filters are sent into the AI context.

No Filters Applied

If no filters are active, ASK AI reviews all available facts in the case.

What to Do When the AI Hits Context Limits

If ASK AI runs into context limits because the case has a very large fact set, you do not need to delete anything.

Instead, reduce the input by applying filters before using ASK AI. This is the best way to keep the context manageable and improve response quality.

Use Filters First

Before opening ASK AI, apply filters in the Facts tab to narrow the information being sent to the AI.

You can use filters such as:

  • Tag filters

  • Document type filters

  • Other fact-level filters relevant to your issue

This helps:

  • Limit how much information ASK AI needs to process

  • Keep responses more focused and accurate

  • Prevent context window errors in large cases

Start a New Chat

You can also start a new ASK AI chat to create a fresh context.

Starting a new chat:

  • Clears the existing chat context

  • Resets the conversation for a cleaner starting point

  • Gives you a better experience when switching to a different issue or topic

When ASK AI is working with a very large fact set, it will explain its limitations and prompt you to narrow the scope with filters when needed.

This approach is more effective than trying to delete content because it keeps the AI focused on exactly what you want to review.

Reviewing Sources and Verifying Information

Every ASK AI response includes source attribution so you can verify the information it used.

  • Click the source icon to view the original fact

  • The PDF viewer opens automatically so you can review the information in context

  • You can keep the PDF viewer open while continuing to chat with ASK AI

This makes it easy to confirm the response against the record without interrupting your workflow.

Managing the ASK AI Interface

ASK AI includes several controls to fit your workflow:

  • Pin or minimize the chatbot using the control in the upper-right corner

  • Keep ASK AI visible in a docked view while continuing other work

  • Resize the chatbot window to match your screen and preferences

  • Use Copy to Clipboard to paste AI responses directly into your working documents

Turning AI Responses Into Case Data

ASK AI allows you to take action directly from its responses.

Creating Facts From AI Responses

  • Click the plus (+) icon below an AI response

  • Select which document the new fact should belong to

Tagging Facts in Bulk

  • Click the tag icon below an AI response

  • Apply tags to all facts used in that response

This saves time and reduces the need to manually update facts one at a time.

Starting a New Chat

When you start a new ASK AI chat:

  • A fresh conversation context is created

  • You can begin a new line of analysis or research

  • This is useful when you want to switch topics or work with a narrower set of filters

Persistent and Shared Conversations

ASK AI conversations are persistent and shared across the case.

  • Your chat history remains available even if you close and reopen ASK AI

  • The same conversation appears no matter where ASK AI is opened in the case

  • Chats are shared with other users working on the same case

Sharing a Conversation

To share a conversation:

  • Open the three-dot menu

  • Copy the chat link

  • Send the link to another user working on the case

New: Smarter Search, Reasoning, and Document Awareness

ASK AI has been significantly enhanced to handle complex cases more intelligently.

Instead of relying only on what is immediately visible, ASK AI can actively search, reason, and surface the most relevant information based on your question.

Smarter Search and Reasoning

ASK AI can now:

  • Search your case using keywords from your question

  • Automatically identify the most relevant facts

  • Review supporting documents such as rating decisions, medical records, C&P exams, and personal statements

  • Pull exact language from documents when needed to support its answer

Because ASK AI can now read document text directly, it is able to provide deeper analysis and more precise responses than a fact-only workflow.

Summary

ASK AI helps you work faster, search more intelligently, and stay grounded in your case data.

Whether you are looking for missing evidence, searching beyond extracted facts, creating new facts or tags from results, or drafting legal content, ASK AI keeps the most relevant information within reach and helps you act on it more efficiently.
